RUSSELL: Tales from a scavenger hunt

It might not have been the ride of Paul Revere, but the North County Times book scavenger hunt proved to be a lot of fun. In my June 12 column, I offered clues as to where I would be dropping off books that same day. I began my mission at 8:54 a.m. Six books were going to be set free all across North County. In each, I placed an envelope with a note explaining that whoever found the book was a winner in the North County Times book scavenger hunt. The note asked the finder to register the book with BookCrossing.com , and to contact me.

My first stop was VG Donut in Cardiff. A line of more than 20 people waited at the entrance, and all the tables were occupied. I felt like a Cold War spy looking to do a message drop unobserved. Rather self-consciously, I walked over to the exit door and left a copy of my novel "Shame." No one jumped out of the bushes. Success! But I wish I'd had time to get a doughnut.

I took the coast route, and tried to eyeball what the Cardiff Kook was wearing ---- either a graduation outfit or a tux. I do love the Kook's getups.

My next stop was Chuao Chocolatier in the Encinitas Lumberyard. Because it doesn't open until 10 a.m. Sunday, I didn't have to deal with any crowds, just nearby outdoor diners. The June gloom wasn't discouraging patrons; most of the tables were full. Still, nobody seemed to take notice of me as I left a copy of "No Cats, No Chocolate."

Going east on Encinitas Boulevard, I was glad to see that the Surfing Madonna was still in place. I stopped for gas in Carlsbad, putting $43 into my vehicle. It crossed my mind that I should try to submit a gas invoice to NCT Books Editor Jim Trageser, but I feared he might hurt himself from laughing so hard.

My column had clued the reader that my "Fat Innkeeper" was in need of weight loss, so I went to the headquarters of Jenny Craig. The industrial park that it's in was deserted on a Sunday, and I couldn't see any lights on in the offices. Plenty of security cameras, though (maybe they're afraid of WeightWatchers espionage).

With the book in hand, I was ambushed by Christine and Neil Gibbs of Carlsbad, who had stealthily pulled into the parking lot. Caught red-handed! My captors admitted that they had just come from Chuao Chocolatier, and wanted to see if they could catch up with me. As children, Christine and Neil were probably the kinds of kids who stayed up trying to catch Santa, too.

The Gibbses both "read a lot," but "it was the scavenger hunt that lured us," Christine said. Not only had they figured out all the clues, they had pored over maps and were prepared to travel all around North County to obtain a book.
