MN High School All-Star Game to Feature Minnetonka Coach, Player
The 2011 football season in Minnesota High School will not begin until mid-August, but head coach Dave Nelson for Minnetonka, season coaching is already underway.
Nelson will be roaming the sidelines of the 38th year of the Minnesota High School football game All-Star Saturday as head coach of the South All-Stars.
Nelson, who served as an assistant coach in 1987 All-Star Game, was chosen to coach the south by the Committee of the All-Star Soccer Coaches Association of Minnesota.
"I am truly honored and excited by the opportunity," said Nelson.
To add to the excitement of the competition this year is the location of the new University of Minnesota TCF Bank Stadium. The previous sites have included Parade Stadium in downtown Minneapolis, Macalester College, and most recently, St. Cloud State University.
"It will be a thrill for all players," said Nelson of the new site. "It gives credibility to the game."
The change of venue is not the only change will bring to the 2011 All-Star contest.The traditional "Metro" or "non-metro" format was changed to an All-Stars against the North South All Star format for the first time since 1979. Now, players from the suburbs, as will team Minnetonka with peers from around the state.
While Division I athletes are not required to participate in the game because of the summer school, a process common to Division I programs, the game will always be based on the Minnesota football players first Preparation. Thirteen Minnesota All-State first team members will participate in the contest and the player of the year 2010 Minnesota Gandy, Reggie De La Salle.
"This is an opportunity for us to present some of the best players in the state of Minnesota," said Nelson.
Nelson knows firsthand, as the list of the South has one of his own players, Minnetonka Josh Colville, a second-team All-State selection at offensive guard.
Colville, who is bound for North Dakota State University on a football scholarship, spent last week on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College with his fellow All-Stars, participate in the traditional week of training camp all the stars.
"It was a nice conclusion of high school football," said Colville experience of all the stars. "It's fun to compare with other top high school players in the state.
