At 17, Alex Gavlick is already a Portland comedy scene veteran

For Alex Gavlick , his personal turning point came at age 15. After working up his courage, he broke the news to his mother.
"He sat me down," Cathy Gavlick recalls. "He said ... 'I'm going into comedy.'"
Mother and son, sitting near each other on a couch at their home in Vancouver, both laugh at the memory of this revelation.
Alex Gavlick wasn't kidding about making comedy his career. Now 17, he's an experienced comedy performer, a curly-haired, rosy-cheeked, fresh-faced veteran of sketch, improv and, his true love, stand-up comedy.
While other high school students spend their downtime on sports, music, video games or their friends, Gavlick spends weekend nights performing at comedy clubs. He's performed in clubs he isn't old enough to legally enter. In April, youth-oriented website Splashlife.com included Gavlick in a nationwide "30 Under 30" list of comedians to watch. He performed at Portland's Bridgetown Comedy Festival, which draws national-caliber comedians, in April. And, earlier this month, he completed a run in Curious Comedy Theater's sketch show, "Apocalypse Now and Later."
Gavlick compiled that résumé while taking care of his other obligation -- attending high school. He graduates Monday, and he's been a standout there, as well.
"Alex is an excellent student," says James O'Banion, principal of the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, a grade 6-12 public school that combines general curriculum with a focus on the arts. "He's very passionate, and well-spoken and obviously has a great sense of humor. He's been our representative to the school board this year. He explains what we're doing, on a monthly basis, with a PowerPoint presentation. His peers really adore him, and he's a great leader."
This fall, Gavlick plans to start college at DePaul University in Chicago.
