10 gardens featured on this year's FMAAA tour

Advance tickets are $10 and available at The Bookmark, Hy-Vee, Kempker's Tru Value, Huffman's Farm&Home, and FMAAA in Ft. Madison; at The Medium and Ivy Bake Shoppe in Burlington; The Grapevine in West Point; Gate City Seed in Keokuk. Tickets available in the Gardens day of event for $13. Sites will be marked with the Birdhouse signs. Narratives, Maps, and Bottled Water available at the Gardens. The Madison MidTown Tour is comprised of homes that are located in the middle of the town. They have less yard space to work with but what they have done with it is truly amazing. FMAAA is known for their proximity garden locations. On the tour this year you can park and walk the main three cluster areas on the map. The town's Community Garden at the Sheaffer Parking lot will be the location for the blowout plant sale. And you will too. The gate opens to the home of a Fairmount Park Chinese Scholar Tree. This tree is one of the oldest types in Philadelphia, sometimes spanning diameter of five people holding hands around it. It is a tree to be planted at the graves of beloved teachers. This one is planted for the memory of Ruth Van Tuyl, formerly a teacher at FMHS. Check out the blue German wine bottle border when viewing the Pagoda tree. The Julia Child Roses should be in bloom. Cleome will dazzle with differing colors and see the Fallopia container pot. While Kathy maintains the floral and herb varieties, Steve is the vegetable master. With eight varieties of tomatoes he is always sure to pull at take. The Mr. Stripey variety can garner some huge sizes. Joe was faced with the dilemma of great shade tree in the middle of the backyard whereby grass would not grow. The solution: Shade Garden with plenty of hostas. The majority of the plants in the 360 degree perimeter garden are tagged with identification markers. Joe was given a resin mold which allowed him to create over 280 colored concrete tiles, over 60 bags of concrete over time. The design molds will be on display and they tiles certainly accentuate the space. Joe has a dozen red bowling balls strategically placed in perimeter of the large shade garden. When queried, found them to be protection for the plants from the watering hose! Connie has created a garden that blooms in all four seasons. The 360 degree perimeter is packed to the gills with more than just the koi and goldfish in the water garden. The Butterfly Plants spread like wildfire.
