New Caney High School Welding Class : Eagle Times

Welding, the fusion of metals using heat from electrical currents, is a prominent technique in metalworking. Most metal objects in modern society, such as vehicles, buildings, and bridges, incorporate some degree of welding in their construction, because of its relative cost-effectiveness and strength. Students experience welding art at New Caney High School, where welding classes occur every day, some in partnership with Lone Star College.
The welders at New Caney produce various metal products and also repair broken or damaged metal goods. “Many students may choose to have the skills as a hobby for working on their own projects…many of my advanced students will make their own projects like hog traps and BBQ pits, as well as make repairs on their vehicles,” Welding teacher Mr. Burks said.
Safety is a concern when using the potentially dangerous tools of the trade. The heat produced by the torch can exceed 11,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Students take precautions by learning various safety techniques and wearing facemasks, avoiding burns and potential blindness from sparks produced by the metals.
Much is involved in welding beyond fusing metals with a torch. There are three types of welds learned at NCHS: gas metal arc welding, shielded metal arc welding (the most common type), and gas tungsten arc welding. The difference between these welding types is the speed, cost and a few differences in the way the machines operate.
Welding provides a variety of job opportunities in different occupational fields, from working on an oil rig to a metal fabrication shop. “I teach students enrolled the Welding Technology program various welding and cutting skills that they can use in the construction industry,” Mr. Burks said. “Students who go on and excel in the program, and choose welding as a career, can find jobs in the pipeline and structural steel fields,” he continued.
Despite its attractiveness as a trade course that prepares students for a variable career, welding is traditionally viewed as a “man’s trade”; however, a few female students have enrolled in the class. “Welding is not just for boys. I have several girls who take the classes also,” Mr. Burks revealed.
Welding is a vital aspect of the infrastructure that supports the modern world. Student welders who pursue a career in welding participate in the creation of something bigger than them—even twenty stories bigger!
