McLean resident Beth Nonte Russell knows how quickly plans can change. It was 1999 when she got a call from a friend asking Russell to accompany her to China so she could adopt a baby girl. Russell, who was then working as a counselor, jumped at the chance to travel.

"We got to China, and the baby was brought to us, but within 24 hours my friend said she couldn’t take the baby," Beth Nonte Russell said. "During that time, I had really bonded with the baby, and I told my friend on the spot that I would take her. I was thinking it would buy her some time to figure it out, maybe she was just under stress."

But Russell’s friend didn’t change her mind, and so she was faced with the prospect of calling her husband Randy and telling him that her vacation overseas had turned into much more than that.

"The phone rang at about midnight, and it was very unexpected. I was sound asleep, and I wasn’t expecting to talk to Beth for a few days," Randy Russell said. "I could tell right away from her voice that something wasn’t going right, and then she just popped the question: ‘What would you think about adopting this baby?’"

While having a question of this magnitude thrown on somebody who is barely awake might take some time to answer, Randy Russell says it didn’t take him long at all.

"I had an instantaneous answer: ‘Yes. Bring her home,’" he said. "When you face a situation like that, it’s not a cost benefit or risk-reward analysis. It’s one of those questions that depending how you answer it, changes your life. It had a profound impact on me, and it’s probably the most significant event in my life. It opened up things in me that I had no idea about."

BETH RUSSELL remembers the rest of her trip as one of the most emotionally grueling times in her life.

"I kept telling myself to dig down deep, to find the strength not to blow it," she said. "It tested every humanitarian and spiritual instinct I had."

Beth Nonte Russell soon quit her job to care for Lily, and began writing down her experiences in a journal. In 2004, she turned those writings into "Forever Lily," a novel that chronicles her journey to China and her experiences with the unexpected adoption.

"It was so cathartic to write it all down, and I started making copies at Kinko’s to give to my husband and sisters, anyone who was asking me how it all happened," she said.
