Buncombe County Schools Update

In Buncombe County declining enrollment figures—down 228 students at the beginning of the year — strongly suggest a study be undertaken to determine if re-drawing attendance lines would be feasible to maximize capacity, better balance schools and save teaching jobs.

Re-examining the expensive policy of building intermediate schools as a response to overcrowding in some districts In 2007 the Buncombe County School Board decided to use this method rather than redistricting. Roberson and Erwin Intermediate Schools are nearing completion and an intermediate school in the Enka district is on schedule to be built within the next five years.

Consolidating some county school system operations with city school systems such as maintenance, technology, etc. The state only requires seven central office positions, BCS have 267.

Holding monthly work sessions to fully educate school board members on the challenges ahead so we can determine priorities and set agenda items. (This is already practiced by other local boards of education including Asheville City and Henderson County Schools, as well as larger systems such as Cabarrus and Gaston County Schools.) As the Reynolds representative on the BCSB, I intend to continue to work on your behalf to come up with the kind of solutions that will ensure our children receive the best education possible without breaking the bank. I believe the local board of education serves as a check and balance system, providing oversight and holding administrators accountable for students’ education and responsible use of tax dollars. I would appreciate your input and support as I believe it may require a grassroots effort by parents, students and teachers to get the full school board to take action on these issues. Do you wonder what other counties with large amounts of snowfall and mountainous terrain do on snow days? Watauga County School’s Transportation Director, Toni Floyd said, “Since the early 1990s Watauga County Schools have been utilizing snow emergency bus routes when feasible.” According to Ms. Floyd, Plan A is the least restrictive with buses not traveling on gravel roads or at higher elevations. Plan B means buses only travel on main roads and school roads. WCS utilizes fire departments and other locations as pick-up or drop-off points. WCS worked with NC DOT to determine these plans. Maybe it’s about time we did the same.
