Mosquito Creek Lake in Northeast Ohio’s Turnbull County is the state’s second largest inland state. The fish are always biting at the lake which covers over 7800 acres. Anglers head to the lake for walleye, bass, northern pike, flathead and channel catfish, black and white crappie, bluegill, brown bullhead, and yellow perch. The lake is also a hotspot for ice fishing where walleye and panfish are in abundance during winter. The tail waters below the dam is perfect for anglers. Fishing for walleye is best by drifting, trolling, or casting. Minnows, crankbaits, jigs, and nightcrawlers are most effective. Northern pike are best fished in March and April with crankbaits, spoons, and large shiners. Spring and fall bring anglers better luck with largemouth bass and bluegill that are easily fished close to the shore. Plastic worms, spinner baits, and surface lures are excellent bait for largemouth bass. Spring through fall is also the time to cast your line from the shore for white bass. Bluegills tend to bite on maggots, small worms, and waxworms on size 10 or smaller hooks. Channel catfish that are found in many places around the lake are easy bait with shrimp, chicken liver, and nightcrawlers on size 4 hooks. Trotlines and floatlines are permitted between State Route 88 causeway and the Division of Wildlife refuge buoys to the north. The state encourages anglers to enter their prize catch in the Fish Ohio angler recognition program which meets the minimum size requirement set. The Mosquito Lake State Park provides over 200 campsites for visitors. There is also a swimming beach and picnic areas. Mosquito Lake has many access points including State Route 88 that bisects the lake. State Route 46 runs along the eastern shore. There are no horsepower restrictions on boats although there are designated speed limits. There are several boat ramps including two state-operated ramps.
