Diaper ban continues for NKY pools

COVINGTON - The ban on children in diapers swimming in pools in Boone, Campbell, Kenton and Grant counties continues as public health officials scramble to slow a shigella outbreak.

"We realize a lot of people plan to take their little ones swimming in the summer, but this is a measure to stop the spread of an illness that can be pretty serious for little ones," said Emily Gresham Wherle, spokeswoman for the Northern Kentucky Health Department.

When health officials can demonstrate that the bacterial infection is contained, they will lift the ban that has been in effect since June 3, Gresham Wherle said. The ban does not apply to backyard pools.

The bacteria can cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pains for five days to seven days. It is treated with antibiotics.

"If nothing else, it makes the patient very uncomfortable and they have to stay home from work or child care," Gresham Wherle said.

While the health department logs about 25 cases of shigella a year, 74 cases have been reported in the four counties since April. More than half the sickened people are young children. The initial cases were linked to child-care centers but the bacterium is known to spread in swimming pools.

The last outbreak was in 2007 when the health department reported 328 cases between May and December.

As part of the measures to stop the spread, two pools were temporarily closed because infected people had been in the pools. The two pools, Taylor Mill Swim Club and Florence Aquatic Center, have reopened after operators upped the chlorine content to extremely high level for 13 hours to 25 hours, depending on several conditions including the weather. Gresham Wherle said process is called "super chlorination" or "shocking the pool."

Even if pools are properly chlorinated, the bacteria can still spread, Gresham Wherle said.

There are more than 350 pools, from public pools to swim clubs and hotels, that are inspected by the health department in the four counties it serves. Pools are also given a protocol to follow if there is an "accident" in the water that includes closure and increasing chorine amounts.

Gresham Wherle said it is hard to contain fecal matter even in diapers designed for swimming. Parents are also urged not to change diapers poolside.
