The Ghost of Christmas Past | Jennifer Moody

Before we get into the New Year, can I just say a few more things that I love about the Christmas season?

1. A real tree. I like the smell so much. Noble firs are my favorites, although I’ve given in the last several years and allowed Douglas because they are fat and nicely shaped and cheap (keep your jokes to yourself, bucko).

2. Food traditions. My Italian heritage requires fish on Christmas Eve (clam spaghetti, mussels, fresh crab if we can get it, and a big ol’ tray of fishsticks and other fried stuff). My husband’s birthday heritage requires leg of lamb on Christmas Day (usually with mashed potatoes, peas and his favorite Christmas cookies, a sort of Scandinavian shortbread with jam).

3. Five Christmas cartoons: Frosty, Rudolph, Charlie Brown, the Grinch and  “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.”

4. Certain carols: Julie Andrews’ “Wexford Carol,” Barbra Streisand’s “Ave Maria,” Johnny Mathis’ “The Christmas Song,” which a preschooler I once knew called the just-not song. “You know. ‘Just-NOTS roasting on an open fire …’”

5. Lights, lights and more lights. I need green lights for my bushes next year. NEED them.

6. Helping the Princesses shop and/or craft for others. This year, Little Princess and I went on an absolute safari to find her big sister the perfect purple fuzzy pillow. We ended up having to drive all the way to Salem, and we both jumped up and down in the aisles when we found it. Ah, the joy of Christmas!

7. Candy canes.

Merry past Christmas, 2010. God bless us, every one.
