The Animal Kingdom Lodge, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary by earning a coveted Four Diamond rating from the AAA travel club, demonstrated its strength during the most recent recession. Disney says the lodge churned out higher-than-average occupancy rates during the downturn, even as resort-wide occupancy sank from a peak of 93 percent to low of 81 percent. The lodge, for instance, is home to the largest publicly displayed collection of African art outside of the continent. More than 800 artifacts are on display between Jambo House and Kidani Village — the two buildings that constitute the lodge — from royal drinking horns out of Cameroon to a 16-foot-high Ijele mask that is the first of its kind ever to leave Nigeria. "The popularity of Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge has to do with the fact that more and more of our guests love the unique experience it provides," added Kevin Myers, vice president of resort operations at Disney World. "The entire experience clearly exhibits a passion for the environment, as well as amenities and services focused on animals, culture and conservation." Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge is unique in another respect, as well: It is the last, at least in Orlando, of the lavishly themed, deluxe hotels that established Disney's reputation as a high-end hotel operator. (The Animal Kingdom Lodge was designed by the same architect who did Disney's Wilderness Lodge, another of Disney World's iconic luxury hotels.) Stations that built Disney World Animal Kingdom Lodge has opened were either "value" hotels - the cheapest of the three categories Disney hotel, which also include moderate and luxury - and Disney Vacation Club time share. The largest hotel under construction in the resort is the Art of Animation Disney Resort, another hotel value.
