What are Bad Carbs? – List of Bad Carbohydrates
On the topic of health and diet, you have probably heard the terms “good carbs” and “bad carbs.” However, do you really understand them? Isn’t a carb just a carb? In this article, let’s explore this issue further.
Generally, when you say “carbohydrates,” you refer to the chemical compounds which are composed of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon. They join together and form molecules. Those which have one or two sugar molecules are also known as simple carbohydrates while those which are comprised of multiple sugar molecules are known as complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are also called the “bad carbs.”
Before going further into the matter of bad carbs, you have to understand first what carbohydrates are for.
Our body needs carbohydrates so it can normally function. Whenever you consume carbohydrates, your body breaks them up and converts them into glycogen (sugar). This sugar is a useful source of energy. When you don’t have carbs in your diet, you will be lethargic and weak, and you can’t do things that you’re supposed to do.
Now, the thing about bad carbs is since they are only made up of one or two sugar molecules, they can be broken down easily and quickly. In fact, they get converted into sugar immediately after consumption, causing the blood sugar (glucose) levels to promptly increase. When this happens, you get a sudden boost of energy.
You probably think that nothing’s really wrong with getting a sudden boost of energy. Well, initially, it may seem like that. However, this rapid rise of energy level is typically followed by a sharp drop too. In other words, the increased stamina is actually temporary. After you’ve had the energy surge, you’d suddenly become exhausted. You may even feel weak, shaky, and unable to go on with your task as efficiently as possible.
Aside from the crash of energy, another thing which makes bad carbs bad is they make weight gain so easy. This is because when you consume them, you tend to feel hungry very quickly. Well, this is understandable because since they have low nutritional value, they barely have anything to keep you full for long. As a result, you would end up eating more and frequently.
Apart from weight gain, other ugly side effects of bad carbs consumption are tooth decay, mood swings, diabetes, poor concentration, and hyperactivity especially in children. If you want to prevent these from happening, the best thing to do is limit your intake of bad carbs.
