Pentagon chief Panetta on first Afghanistan visit
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says the U.S. and its allies are close to beating al-Qaida.
On his first visit to Afghanistan in his new role as Pentagon chief, Panetta says the May 2 raid that killed Osama bin Laden has yielded new insights about the group's other leaders. He says eliminating about 10 to 20 of them would cripple the network.
Panetta says those key leaders are scattered in Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and North Africa.
The tapped to success Panetta at the CIA says al-Qaida is on the run. Gen. David Petraeus (peh-TRAY'-uhs) says "enormous damage" has been done to the group in areas of western Pakistan.

Cholera returns to rural Haiti amid fears that relief funds to contain it are running dry
MIREBALAIS, Haiti — Haiti is seeing a resurgence of cholera.
Weeks of heavy rains have helped spread the waterborne bacteria. The health ministry says the number of new cases reached about 1,000 a day by the end of June after spiking at 1,700 in the middle of the month. There are concerns that cases could surge again as the rainy season develops.
Aid workers say they're afraid they won't have enough resources if things gets much worse.
More than 5,500 have died since the outbreak started in October.

UPDATE: Jeter gets 3,000th hit, first Yankee to do it
NEW YORK (AP) — Derek Jeter has joined baseball's 3,000th hit club.
After singling in his first at bat of the day, the shortstop stroked a home run to left for the milestone before a packed crowd at Yankee Stadium.
Jeter becomes the 28th major leaguer to record 3,000 and the first player to reach the mark with the New York Yankees. He and former teammate Wade Boggs are the only players to reach the 3,000 plateau with a home run.
Jeter's historic hit came against Tampa Bay All-Star David Price. He then followed it up with a double in the fifth.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Funeral services will be held Monday for a Texas firefighter who had a fatal fall when reaching out to grab a baseball tossed his way during the Rangers game.
Services will be held at First United Methodist in Brownwood, a town about 150 miles from Arlington where 39-year Shannon Stone had been a firefighter for 18 years.
