Gospel Music School returns to MSU

Director Dr. Charles Novell said the conference’s name belies its mission. “Our roots are Southern Gospel, but as times have changed and different styles have entered, we have adapted,” he said. Novell says people come from all different musical backgrounds, including Christian pop, choral music and praise and worship.

Classes include choral technique for choir directors, music theory, sight singing/ear training and performance training. Attendants take workshops in songwriting, the Nashville numbers system, vocal range development, and song interpretation. Students must also take private lessons with faculty throughout the week.

“It’s more than a camp. It’s steeped in academics,” said Novell, “I think of a camp as fun and games. We’re focused on the ministry of music.” Graduates of the school have gone on to do traveling music ministry, lead church worship and record albums.  Some have enrolled at Murray State after visiting for the school. “We have a young man, Trey Butler, from the Nashville area. He came last year when he was a senior in high school,” Novell said. “He liked what he saw and felt a great atmosphere in the city of Murray and the campus there.”  Butler starts his Freshman year at MSU this fall.

This year, approximately 33 people have signed up to attend. “Attendance is down from years past,” Novell said. “The economy has really taken its toll, because travel costs are high.” Attendees still come from all over the United States, with the farthest traveling from Arlington, Texas.

Novell said that some who come to the camp are non-singers. Instrumentalists, songwriters, or those interested in sound design and the technical side of music have all benefited. “But the bulk of our people who come to the school are singers, because Christian music is a vocal medium,” Novell said.

Novell said of the Christian music scene, “We’re in a state today between the contemporary praise and worship and the traditional.” It’s become a divisive issue in some churches. As a solution, churches leaders may host two Sunday services, one with traditional songs, and the other with contemporary music.

Participants are of all ages. Novell said, “We have young people, we have teenagers, some have their parents bring them because they can’t drive yet. Then we have middle-aged people. Then we have people of great wisdom.” Novell is amazed that the group gets along well together. “They come because they have a love of Christian music,” he said.
