Denise TeWinkle started a small candle retail business in Findley Lake, N.Y., in 1992. The business was called Candle-Escents. The following year, the business expanded into a larger space and a year later moved down the street into a house overlooking scenic Findley Lake.

Behind the ''candle house'' was an old chicken coop that had been used for storage for many years and that is where the Candle-Escents Candle Factory got its start.

Mrs. TeWinkle said tells how she started blending different waxes and experimenting with different types of wicks from around the world until she found the perfect combination for her votive candles.

''Back in 1999, we didn't have computers or the Internet and all I had to start with was a candle brochure and a name of a candle making supplier to buy raw materials from,'' she said. ''From that point, it took months to find the scents that I liked and started blending oils and colors to make the perfect votive candle.''

She started with 10 different scented candles, pouring 50 candles at a time.

''Customers were buying them faster than I could pour, so we expanded into large wax melting tanks that held 100 pounds of wax and I could pour up to 1,000 candles a day,'' she said.

With a choice of more than 60 scented candles to choose from, customers could mix a dozen candles that burned over 15 hours each.

The factory then expanded over time into making floating candles, jar candles and long burning cake candles and many more items.

''We built a wonderful customer base with our candles and our customers enjoyed watching us make then in the Ocandle coop,'' she said. ''Over the years we were selling our candles in our five locations as well as building a wholesale business. My factory manager, Annette Swan and I poured over 4,000 grape votive candles for a customer from North East, Pa., for the wine festival. The business grew at a constant rate and my dream of a candle business, with the help of my family and staff, had come true.''

A DIFFICULT DECISION

In 2005, Denise made the difficult decision to sell the candle factory business and just work to expand her business at the new location near Ashville.

''We purchased the building that had been the Artis Tree and expanded Candle-Escents into triple the size we had in Findley Lake. We also added a country food store and expanded our wedding room to the second floor. Selling the candle making business was a difficult decision,'' said Denise. ''It was my baby and I wanted to make sure whoever the new owner was, would love and take care of it as much as I did. In 2006, the right person came along who had the talent and desire to fulfill her dream of owning her own candle business and her company would continue to make our votive, jar and cake candles for our Ashville store.
