Coast Guard training: Unsmooth sailing
Crescent City Coast Guard officials took a day off from their regular duties for some safety training Wednesday aboard the cutter Dorado.Lt. j.g. Thomas Faulkenberry, commanding officer of the Dorado, said the crew usually likes to be out patrolling the seas when the weather is nice, but that annual training is necessary.
“It’s really good for a small crew like this,” Faulkenberry said. “It’s good to train.”
He said the Dorado has recently seen a 70 percent turnover in crew members due to the Coast Guard moving officers around to other posts. He said the training should help everyone be on the same page when emergencies arise.
A three-member training team from Alameda helped the local crew of eight prepare for emergencies on the ship Wednesday and will continue today.
Officials practiced responding to a fire in the ship’s engine room and trainers simulated scenarios using color-coded flags. One trainer waving a red flag representing fire rushed at a crewman clad in firefighting gear. The “flames” drove the firefighter from the room.
Then everything went black. The electricity had been shut off.
Outside on the deck, the crew donned fire safety suits and set up a fire hose to be carried down to the engine room.
A couple of crew members struggled to get a pump going that would provide ocean water to douse the flames.
Eventually the fire was deemed to be out after crew members carried the hose down to the engine room.
Faulkenberry said the training is especially valuable when things don’t go smoothly and equipment proves difficult.
“We like it when the drills don’t exactly go as planned, because then you learn something,” he said.
The Dorado is responsible for patrolling 290 miles of the California coast from the Oregon border to Point Arena, almost to Bodega Bay.

Sanitation was primitive; food transport was slow and uncertain and refrigeration did not exist. Social safety nets were porous and weak. The cities were regularly scourged by disease and fire. Urban populations tended to shrink in those years if not

For example, in 1983, a NASA contractor developed a safety net for astronauts working on the orbiters. The net was designed to be small, fire resistant, and have lots of tensile strength (the strength to withstand stretching without warping).

There are some serious misconceptions about house fires like the number one misconception when people thinks fire will not happen to them. That is why I like the fire safety coloring pages to teach and remind children of what to do in the event of fire.
