New details revealed in Fort Lauderdale millionaire murder

Ronald Vinci told a friend a few months ago that he intended to break things off with his long-time girlfriend, Catherine Pileggi.

“He said the relationship had run its course,’’ said Dean Kantis, a broker who sells high-priced planes. “Ron said to me, listen, I’ll make sure she’s OK. She’ll be well provided for.’’

Apparently, Catherine Pileggi did not think Vinci, a self-made multimillionaire who had earned his fortune selling cars, would live up to his word.

In an arrest affidavit and search warrants, Fort Lauderdale police said Pileggi, 54, shot him in the head, stabbed him in the chest, bludgeoned his body and slit his throat. Then, after wrapping Vinci’s body in a red and black sleeping bag, taping his abdomen with blue painter’s tape and stuffing white paper towels in his mouth, she tried to get the handyman to help her bury his body at sea.

The handyman balked, thinking that this was not a good idea..

On Thursday, Kantis and Fort Lauderdale police search warrants revealed more details into the killing in a million-dollar Fort Lauderdale mansion at 101 SW Coconut Dr., a house that Vinci, 70, had purchased weeks earlier.

Kantis, who matches aircraft buyers and sellers, remembers the casual conversation the two friends had about Vinci losing interest and moving on. The men met a few years ago when Vinci was looking to purchase an Embraer jet that was for sale through Kantis’ website. They remained friends, talking about business and airplanes, rarely about Pileggi.

When her name did come up, “We talked about how he wasn’t really into the relationship as much,” Kantis said.

Vinci also mentioned wanting to make sure Pileggi was taken care of after the break up.

Kantis didn’t worry when his friend didn’t return phone calls and the voice mail on his cell phone registered as full.

He had no idea what had happened to Vinci until a potential client told him more than a day later. Investigators say they believe Pileggi was enraged by the impending break up and still blaming Vinci for her sister’s death while on vacation with the couple in 2009. What role he may have played in the death - which may have been a drug overdose that occurred on a cruise ship - is unclear.

Another friend found Vinci’s body on June 28 in a first-floor guest bedroom of the 8,151-square-foot house, according to the warrants, under a pile of black plastic bags.
