The celestial creatures float high above several doorways, peer out from corners and even decorate a tabletop in the Thompsons' handsome residence. Most are original creations by American folk artists.

The tabletop was Carol's creation. She'd purchased a kitchen table with a butcher-block top. She grew to dislike it. A lot. One night, about 3 a.m., she impulsively rose from the couple's four-poster bed, grabbed a paint can and brush, and painted the entire tabletop black.

Naturally, Bill was aghast the next morning. But Carol wasn't done. She traced the outline of a favorite trumpet-blowing angel on the dried paint. Using more paint, she filled it in. Later, she sealed the painting with six layers of clear polyurethane.

The Thompsons live in the Highland Woods community of 25 homes on the Broadneck Peninsula, a neighborhood designed for folks aged 55 or better.

"We moved from First Street in Eastport in 2004. We loved it," said Carol. "But our doctor advised us to have a house with a first-floor bedroom. It took two years to find this house."

It happened by serendipity. Daughter-in-law Brenda Brown was driving along College Parkway and spotted a sign advertising the community. Only two houses were left.

The Thompsons have been well-regarded for their volunteer work through the years.

Carol, who had a long career as a fundraiser and non-profit management expert, started the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County and the annual Celebration of Philanthropy Luncheon, now in its 11th year. She co-founded the county's volunteer center.

Bill is a past president of the Navy League and was an active volunteer with SCORE, described as a 12,400-member volunteer non-profit association sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration. For current and potential small business owners seeking expert advice, SCORE matches them up with their volunteer business-management counselors. Bill was an engineer with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft until his retirement in 1993. He is an avid skier and golfer.

The Thompsons are active members of Calvary United Methodist Church.

Carol's kids live nearby. Daughter Karen Brown Beveridge lives in Potomac with husband Peter Beveridge and their two children. Son David Brown lives in the Providence community nearby with his wife Brenda and their kids Harrison and Tori.

Carol and Bill met when a neighbor of Carol's introduced them. Carol was divorced, raising her two children in Bethesda. The couple dated for seven years. When Carol brought Bill to her 20th high school reunion, several girlfriends pulled her aside. "Don't let him get away," they advised.
