Chevrolet Small-Block V-8: the Little Engine That Still Can

Chevrolet, marking its 100th anniversary this week with its sponsorship of cruise metro Detroit Woodward Dream, said Thursday it would build the 100 millionth version of its small-block V-8 engine this year.

It is fair that the automaker would celebrate this milestone during the festival, as the power plant will no doubt be found under the hood of vehicles than any other cruise engine, but not all of these cars will be powered Chevy-GM products.

The small block term refers to the compact design of the engine, an attribute revolutionary when he arrived in 1955.Ground shaking, meanwhile, is its performance potential. While current versions of the engine have changed significantly, they retain the basic geometry and artists continue to be stout.

Many small blocks have come and gone, but among them, such as '55 and the unit used in the 2011 Corvette ZR1, known as the LS9 series, Bookends are more than just a rich history.

The standard version, rated at 162 horsepower, had a double-barrel carburetor and single exhaust.An update provided four carburetor body, dual exhaust and 180 horsepower, a significant increase in the power of 115 standard Chevy 6-cylinder engine of 1954 and not far behind the output of 250 horsepower Cadillac V -8. More importantly, the Chevy engine was more modern, more compact and lighter than the piece of Cadillac. The Chevy 265 was the second overhead valve V-8 developed by Ed Cole, the engineer of GM's Cadillac was his first.

Effective packaging, was only part of what made the first block resonate with fans young.The engine was designed with stud-mounted rocker ball-and-socket that were lighter than other models. The intake and exhaust ports were large and straight, so that the engine could breathe deeply. The stroke of the crankshaft was short compared to other engines, so the move was made with large cylinder bores. These factors make the engine reliable, powerful and capable of operating at high speed

The supercharged LS9 6.2-liter V-8 that powers the Corvette ZR1, meanwhile, generates 638 horsepower and 604 lb-ft of torque.One of the best in the world, is nonetheless based on the engine configuration and valve train push that date back directly to its ancestor.

John Rydzewski, Chevrolet assistant chief engineer for small block engine, said in a telephone interview that block LS9's aluminum cylinder block is similar to the melting of 265 in that it shares the same bore centers 4.4 inches, 90 degrees packaging configuration and compact.It differs in that the original block ended just below the axis of the handle, while the casing of the recent small blocks extends well below the midline to allow for extra rigidity. He added that changes to the design of small blocks have been gradual, and no engine in the series was a clean-sheet redesign.

Registration is free, fast and simple, join Blazer Forum today ! just wondering what rims will fit on a 97 blazer i thought my f150 rims would fit because thier 5 bolt also..but bolt pattern is different, so no luck there, so will hubcaps work on aluminum rims? or what other chevy rims will work? i dont have much money to spend on looks.....but i cant stand the ugly rims i have now, id love chrome or aluminum rims, somethin shiny and that looks good, dunno how to explain the style i want, but if you post pics of what you have maybe i can explain it better, thanks everyone!!!! id love to see eveyones pictures of thier rims on thier blazers!!! trying to brainstorm to see what i want to do, i have a white 4 door4x4, and i dont like the 97 factory rims, i want chrome or aluminum, but something with a 5star look or something like that.....i cant do black or dark rims, just a pet peeve thanks guys!, also id like to do a slight lift on it and give it some bigger tires for these terrible ohio winters, and to play in mud on occasion. ideas???
